Our mission

American Legion Post 174 – David S. Miles Post – is a not-for-profit, federally chartered veterans’ organization dedicated to serving Oxford, CT, and surrounding communities.

We provide opportunities for fellowship, community involvement, and mutual support among veterans and their families. Our mission is to carry out selfless acts of service to our community, state, and nation.

Our History

Founded in 1946–47, Post 174 was named in honor of David S. Miles, who lost his life during the sinking of the USS Dorchester. This tragic event is remembered for the heroism of four Chaplains who gave up their life jackets to others, sacrificing their lives to save their fellow soldiers.

Since its founding, the post has been a steadfast presence in the Oxford community, bringing veterans together while honoring the sacrifices of those who served.
